Learn the Smell of Propane

Propane is very unique in that it has no naturally occurring odor, but an odor is added to help detect leaks. The smell will typically be that of rotten eggs, a dead animal, or a skunk. If you think you’re smelling propane gas on your property, please read and follow the steps listed below as soon as possible.

If You Think You Smell Propane, Follow These Steps

  1. PUT OUT SPARKS AND FLAMES: Put all smoking materials and any open flames out near you. Don’t turn on appliances, lights, telephones, or even your cell phone. Sparks or flames caused by these can trigger an explosion or a fire, so you must be extremely careful.
  2. LEAVE AT ONCE: Make sure you get everyone out of the building that you smell the gas leak in as soon as you possibly can.
  3. TURN OFF THE GAS SOURCE: Make sure that you turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank–only if it is safe to do so. Close the valve by turning it to the right (clockwise).
  4. REPORT THE LEAK: Get to a safe distance, either a neighbor’s home, or another building away from where the leak is, and call TJ Propane right away. If you can’t reach our office, call 911 immediately.
  5. DO NOT RETURN: Do not return to the area until TJ Propane, or emergency service technicians let you know it’s safe to do so.
  6. GET YOUR EQUIPMENT SERVICED: Before even trying to use your propane appliances, make sure that a qualified technician checks your entire system for leaks.
